As interest in global mental health grows among psychiatry residents in the United States, training programs are beginning to take action. Residents at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City can gain exposure to mental health systems in low- and middle-income countries.

The Mount Sinai Fellowship in Global Mental Health provides a resident in psychiatry with the opportunity to participate in the Global Health Residency track of the Global Health Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The two year residency program includes classroom learning along with residents from other clinical departments, specifically regular journal clubs and a master's level course, Introduction to Global Health. The residency culminates in the design and implementation of a development-focused field project under the supervision of a faculty member in the department of psychiatry during the second year. Currently we are able to fund one resident per year from within Mount Sinai, and field sites are based in Belize and El Salvador. The Fellowship aspires to include more psychiatry residents, including those from outside institutions, as well as medical students. Questions may be directed to Craig L. Katz, M.D., Director of the Fellowship in Global Mental Health, at 212-860-8665 or craig. .
